Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a thread holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
